Over the coming weeks I will be writing a series on a variety of Herman Miller Workchairs. This week I will be discussing the Herman Miller “Sayl” workchair.

Herman Miller Sayl
Herman Miller employed the services of the designer Yves Behar to design a chair that was affordable yet still possessed all the aspects that Herman Miller is so well know for – elegant design, top notch ergonomics and also an awareness of environmental responsibility. Behar began to look at designs that would give a lot for a little. He took inspiration from the Golden Gate Bridge and wondered could the engineering principals of a suspension bridge be applied to an office chair. The answer was yes. Behar used a suspension tower to support an unframed suspension back and the material used was able to be strecthed to provide support in the areas that support was most needed. The 3D suspension back of the chair allows the spine to maintain its natural “S” shape and helps the body to hold a healthy posture with less fatigue. Herman Miller produces the Sayl chair on three continents to reduce the distance between the factory and the buyer. This product itself contains no PVCs and the materials used are almost entirely recyclable.
