How to make a Room/Office space feel bigger
Welcome to part 3 of our series on how to make a room/office space feel bigger
Furniture
When selecting furniture make sure that it has raised legs as this creates a feeling of space and light in the room. Make sure that some of your furniture is light in colour as it will blend in with the walls again helping to give the room an airy feeling.
For an office desk, consider choosing a long desk – preferably the length of the room-as this will also create the illusion of a longer room as well as facilitating use by more than one person. Choose a desk with clean lines will further enhance the feeling of space.
Choosing floor to ceiling storage for your room can make your ceiling look higher than it actually is. If you are using shelving for storage it is recommended that you don’t fill every shelf. By leaving some empty space you will create a more open and airy look.
Using glass topped tables and desks are also a great way of tricking the eye into thinking there is more space than there actually is.
Select some furniture with castors on the legs so you can move it effortlessly when not needed. Use folding chairs for visitors as these can be folded away and are more easily stored when not in use. Try to leave a little room between the furniture and the walls as this makes the room feel more spacious. Select furniture that is in proportion to the size of the room and if you want to make a statement then maybe you could select art work to fulfill that need and, as you will be hanging this on the wall, it won’t be taking up valuable space. It is recommended that you just use one or two walls to display your artwork or photos.
Sometimes it may be better to leave one side of a small room with no furniture thereby creating a passageway so that people can enter or exit the room easily.
