Benefits of standing desks
According to the American Cancer Society website many studies have concluded that long hours of sitting are linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancer, and a shorter life.
Standing desks do have their benefits which are outlined below. However, it should be noted that they are not a replacement for exercise throughout the work day. Intermittent bouts of exercise throughout the day, for example, going to the restroom on the floor above or below you, are of the utmost importance to your general health and wellbeing.
Potential to reduce back pain
Back pain is in short, a pain. In general, approximately eighty percent of adults will experience back pain during their lifetime. In 2011, the “Take a Stand Project” launched. The project stated that prolonged sitting time is a health risk. The project was conducted in Minnesota among employees with sedentary jobs. One group in the project received a sit stand desk and the other group did not. These results followed:
The Take-a-Stand Project reduced time spent sitting by 224% (66 minutes per day), reduced upper back and neck pain by 54%, and improved mood states. Their findings suggest that using a sit-stand device at work can reduce sitting time and generate other health benefits for workers.
Important Standing Desk Considerations
Don’t try to go from a full day of sitting to no sitting at all overnight. Start small with twenty minutes at a time. Add on more time as your body becomes accustomed to the change. Standing up doesn’t sound like too much of a challenge however, when your body is not used to it, standing for long periods of time can cause strain.
